Montecito Success Story:
Ray M.
In mid-November, I tested positive for COVID-19. I was instructed by my doctor to stay home, get plenty of rest, and take over the counter medicine for symptoms. One week later, I was really struggling to breathe and decided to call 911. The paramedics measured my O2 level at 62%. I was immediately taken to the hospital, put into a medically induced coma, and intubated on a ventilator. I was in this coma for 54 days and ended up having a feeding tube and tracheostomy placed to keep me alive. The doctors had poor expectations for me to recover. They informed my family that if I survived, I would never be able to walk, talk, or function at a normal level. In addition, on the remote chance that my mental capacity returned, I would have a significant battle to regain my physical capabilities.
Upon waking on January 18, 2022, my major muscle groups were severely atrophied. The first few weeks after my arrival at Montecito, I was bed bound and needed help even to sit up on the edge of my bed. My primary therapists during my recovery were Kayla (PTA) and Karen (OTA). With the assistance of these two individuals, I have demonstrated significant improvements. They were very patient and persistent with me during my rehab journey. They helped me regain all my mobility and I can now get out of bed, stand, walk, bathe, get dressed, and take care of myself. My trach and feeding tube were removed and I get to discharge back home with my family after being away from them for 100 days! Finally, I must compliment the entire Montecito staff for their can-do attitude, responsiveness, and customer/patient focus.
